Online counseling

Online counseling sessions work well for people who think more clearly when they write, who process feelings or experiences more effectively in writing, or who simply feel more comfortable disclosing feelings in a written conversation.

When we schedule a chat session, I will give you a password that will work only for the interval of our appointment.  You will come to this page at our scheduled time, and CLICK HERE.  Make sure your browser is JAVA ENABLED.  Only you and I have access to our session.  Unlike non-secure settings such as AIM, our messages will be encrypted and incomprehensible to anyone but you and me.

Chat sessions fees are the same as in-office or phone session fees.

An important note about on-line counseling: In the mental health community, we are all watching closely to see how on-line counseling will develop as a subfield. There are many practitioners who are thinking carefully about how (and whether) to incorporate on-line sessions into their practice, how to ensure that we as therapists are able to adequately convey positive regard, a nonjudgmental posture, concern, a tone that conveys nuance -- all the qualities that are more easily read through facial expression, inflection, body language, and shared pauses. Each of us needs to ask, will I be able to convey caring and concern as easily as I can when I am meeting with a client face-to-face? Will I be able to hear the emotional content and tone of a written message as clearly as I can read it in the presence of a client?

The truth is, probably not. And so both client and counselor need to enter an on-line relationship with care, and with a shared understanding that extra effort must be made to ensure that we are understanding each other's messages. That process, that effort to understand -- to check our interpretation against the true message -- needs to be part of the connection that the counselor and client build. It changes the journey, but it is still a meaningful journey that we take together.
